Great English HiFi
Lots of care given whilst at FiF:
New grilles created – made using resonance free plywood – better than the original chipboard ones that are all broken now.
New grille cloths – using very nice vintage dark grey nylon weave fabric (from our secret stash) – quite similar to the original Ditton’s.
All speaker drivers checked out. Mid-range rubber surrounds replaced. Tweeters replaced.
Crossovers checked out – all electrolytic capacitors replaced to ensure long life ‘proper’ operation.
Speaker terminals upgraded to ‘banana’ connections. We’ll include a set of banana plugs to make connection super easy..
Teak cabinets Restored & Re-finished with care by 54 FiveSix Furniture – retaining all original character. Just as they should be, but in fantastic condition.
Tweeters replaced as the original (HP2000), even though possible to repair. These were proven a weak unit – susceptible to environmental damage & prone to ‘cooking’ themselves. So after some deliberation – we thought – “you know what – a modern tweeter could well compliment this set & greatly improve reliability”, after-all the beauty is in the bass & mids with the 44s.
So we investigated suitable replacements. Not that easy – the factory crossover frequency is super high – 5KHz (almost super-tweeter range).
After finding a recommendation from a specialist Celestion Speaker Restorer in the UK, for QTX titanium dome units – required specs are very compatible & they have a wide desperation, which helps given the space between bass & highs on the Ditton 44s.
So, we sourced a set & have been very pleased – the sound is super impressive – dear I say it ‘better’…
Specifications:
Frequency Response: 25 Hz – 40kHz (this is rare – down to the lowest organ notes and soaring like an eagle)
Recommended Amplifier Power: 10 Watts to 100 Watts at 4-8 Ohms – NB. These are the factory specs – in practice we found they need a bit of ‘oomph’ to perform at their best – Would recommend 30-100W RMS amp range
Output sound pressure: 96db /5.5W /m – Very High – will get the most from amps.
Crossover frequencies: Mids – 500 Hz / Highs 5 KHz
Drivers:
Bass – Original Rola- Celestion Bass driver 12″ ‘FC12 Type’
Mid-range – Original Rola – Celestion 5.5″ ‘DS Type’
