Mikasa – Setsuo Aratani, a Japanese-American businessman founded Mikasa as “American Commercial Inc.” in the state of California in 1948.

The dinnerware importer focused on trade with Japan manufacturers.

Mikasa grew into a widely known quality dinnerware wholesaler over the next decade, supplying dinnerware to Bloomingdales, Macy’s, May Department Stores, and other fine retailers throughout the mid-late 1950s.

The 60’s saw a teaming up with a young Canadian department store merchandiser named Alfred Blake.

Expansion continued into the 1970s with showrooms in New York City & New Jersey, along with a ‘budget’ brand for the mass market dubbed “Home Beautiful”.

In 1985 George Aratani forfeited ownership to a management buyout.

At the time Mikasa was generating $137 million in annual sales.
